1. What is the Medical Interpreting Training offered by Gulfcoast South AHEC?
Gulfcoast South AHEC offers comprehensive training for individuals interested in becoming professional medical interpreters. The program equips bilingual individuals with the necessary skills, knowledge, and certification to work as medical interpreters in healthcare settings. This includes training in medical terminology, ethics, cultural competence, confidentiality, and interpretation techniques.
2. Who can participate in the Medical Interpreting Training?
The program is open to anyone who is bilingual in English and another language and has a strong interest in pursuing a career as a medical interpreter. Participants must be fluent in English and at least one more language and should have a desire to help bridge communication gaps between patients and healthcare providers.
3. What is the difference between the 16-Hour and the 40-Hour training?
The main difference is the 40-Hour training fulfills the training requirement to apply for National Certification and provides a “Professionally Trained Medical Interpreter Certificate” upon successful completion. The 16-Hour course is an introductory course on the Basics of Medical Interpreting. The 16- Hour training does not fulfill the requirement to apply for National Certification and participants will receive a “Trained Medical Interpreter Certificate” upon successful completion. Participants can expect to learn about Medical Interpreting at the beginner’s level.
4. What are the costs associated with the Medical Interpreting Training?
The cost of the training varies based on the session and format. The 40-Hour training is $550, and the 16-Hour training is $250. Gulfcoast South AHEC offers competitive pricing, and some payment plans may be available for eligible participants. Please contact AHEC directly for more information on fees and financial assistance.
5. What languages are covered in the training?
The class is offered 100% in English, and all language combinations are encouraged to participate.
6. How long is the Medical Interpreting Training program?
All training courses are hybrid. The 40-hour course is held over 7 sessions (including orientation & final assessment). You will meet once weekly via Zoom for live instruction. The 16-Hour training is held over 4 sessions and meets once a week for live instruction. Both trainings use Google Classroom® platforms. The exact duration and session details are available when you register for the program.
7. Is there a certification upon completion of the training?
Yes, participants who successfully complete the training program are awarded a certificate of completion from Gulfcoast South AHEC. This certificate can serve as an essential credential when applying for interpreting positions in health care facilities. Some programs may also offer guidance for pursuing national certification exams, such as those provided by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) or the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI).
